Snoop Dog Arrested Outside "The Tonight Show"


Rapper Snoop Dogg was arrested November 28th night for allegedly possessing drugs and a firearm.
Burbank Police Department detectives served a search warrant on Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, outside NBC studios in Burbank at approximately 7:30 p.m. this evening. Police say they found the rapper in possession of cocaine, a firearm and a large amount of marijuana. He was also cited for allegedly having a false compartment in his vehicle.
The rapper had just performed on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and was leaving the studio when police pulled his car over.

Terrestrial Planet Finder


Terrestrial Planet Finder is a mission to search for Earth-like planets that might harbor life.

It'll use multiple telescopes working together to take family portraits of stars and their orbiting planets and determine which planets may have the right chemical compo to sustain life.

The mission will study all aspects of planets, from their formation as disks of dust and gas around newly forming stars. It will also look for planets orbiting the nearest stars and study their suitability as homes for any possible life.

The challenge is how to detect planets against the blinding glare of their parent stars. In this effort, the Terrestrial Planet Finder will reduce the glare of parent stars to see planetary systems up to 50 light-years away.

Using spectroscopic instruments, scientists will measure relative amounts of gases like carbon dioxide, water vapor, ozone and methane to determine whether a planet is suitable for life, `or whether life already exists there.
The mission is slated to launch in 2014.

2 + 2

A mathematician, an accountant and an economist apply for
the same job. The interviewer calls in the mathematician and
asks "What do two plus two equal?"

The mathematician replies "Four."
The interviewer asks "Four, exactly?"
The mathematician looks at the interviewer incredulously and
says "Yes, four, exactly."

Then the interviewer calls in the accountant and asks the same
question: "What do two plus two equal?"
The accountant says, "On average, four -- give or take 10%,
but on average, four."

Then the interviewer calls in the economist and poses the
same question: "What do two plus two equal?"
The economist gets up, locks the door, closes the shade, sits
down next to the interviewer, and says,

"What do you want it to equal?"


The Response:
I enjoyed the joke in Issue #6207 "Job Interview," but I
couldn't help making a few minor observations.

1) Isn't it usually the ACCOUNTANT who asks, "What do you want
it to be?" since they are best known for their "creative"
arithmetic?

2) No mathematician I know would continue to give the answer
"four" when pushed. Engineers are the same. Of course, as you
are well aware, two plus two equals five (for large values of
two) or even three (for small values of two).

"Two," given as it is to just one significant figure (it was
described as neither exact nor integral), can take any value in
the range [1.5, 2.5) where the right hand limit is open. The
mathematician in the story should have picked this up when
challenged with the word "Exactly?" after the initial response.

3) The tolerances quoted by the accountant in the story are now
transparently incorrect. Given the error bounds of the original
values, two plus two can therefore lie anywhere in the range
[3.0, 5), which for the median value of "4" actually represents
error tolerances of ±25% not ±10%.

The use of the word "on average," however, is justified by
reference to the Central Limit Theorem, which states that the
mean/median of all the sample means/medians drawn from a given
population interval is equivalent to the mean/median of that
population interval, given the limiting case of all possible
samples.

The population has not been clearly defined but can be inferred
from the given data without loss of generality. Perhaps if the
accountant had paid a little more attention in his Statistics and
Real Analysis classes at College, he wouldn't have been quite
so naive in his unqualified response.

4) The economist had presumably read “Principia Mathematica” by
Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead, which proved
conclusively on page 362, that given sufficiently rigorous
definitions of unity, addition and equality, 1 + 1 = 2.

I presume, therefore, that the economist was clarifying the
question with the interviewer so that the repeated "two" in the
question could be identified with the above - cited
Russell/Whitehead definition of "2," and hence carry with it the
proven equivalence with "1 + 1."

Given further the identification of "plus" with the
Russell/Whitehead "+," it would then be reasonable to equate
"two plus two" with "2 + 2" and hence obtain the answer
"1 + 1 + 1 + 1."

Since this construct has yet to be formally defined as "4,"
unless implicitly assuming John Conway's Construct of the
Natural Numbers (a set theory argument), it is right to
question the interviewer as carefully as he did.

5) I personally made the answer 100.
But then I was working in binary.

from lovable munnabhai to jail..


Sunjay Dutt, a filmstar with a roalercoaster life. Starting his career with Rocky in 1981, he always carried an enfant terrible image and failed to get going in the films. His mother's premature death from lung cancer led him to drug abuse.

Sanjay overcame this addiction, visiting a drug rehabilitation centre in US, but personal problems in his life were aggravated with his wife Richa's death due to cancer.

He made a comback from a lover boy in Rocky to a gritty action hero in Khalnayak, and Thanedaar in 1990s. However, his career suffered another setback when in a development the whole nation was shocked by the news of Sanjay's involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts which had killed 257 people. Sanjay got arrested on April 19, 1993. Was released on bail three months later but was again sent to jail for 15 months on July 14.

He was charged with illegally possessing an AK-56 riffle and for destroying the weapon.

Sanjay again overcame the bad patch with sucessful movies like Vaastav and Mission Kashmir. Now with his conviction, he has just tasted the biggest success of his career in his 20 year old career with the mega hit Munnabhai films in which he plays a don with a golden heart.

He went through another tragedy last year when he lost his father Sunil Dutt. Recently divorced his recent wife Rhea Pillai and is currently bing linked to a Pakistan-born belly dancer.

In the run up to the verdict in the blasts case, Sanjay has stopped all his film work as he is unable to concentrate in shooting.

Himesh Reshammiya was picked up by the cops late last night. The famous ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ singer has been reported for singing in a very irritating voice and causing disturbances for innocent children who are already suffering from examination fever. Himesh was kept at the central police station for the entire night and was made to hear his own music in a closed room at full volume. He apparently broke down and swore not to sing again. People have been making allegations against him for generating fear amongst small children who were being made to watch him in every next music video on national television. His habit of not bathing and using the same cap, clothes and an unshaven look has been scaring women off television. The district magistrate has ordered a probe into the allegations and if the charges are proved, Himesh might have to go through a horrifying death penalty.Get off the TV now!

WWE returns to Iraq this Christmas



Armed Forces Entertainment has once again invited World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to bring holiday cheer and perform a series of wrestling matches for US troops based in Iraq.

On Christmas night, 25 December 2006 the WWE will present WWE Tribute to the Troops: Christmas in Baghdad. In India WWE airs on Ten Sports. This television special will highlight military personnel telling their stories, interacting with WWE Superstars, and enjoying a presentation of WWE action.
This year, the WWE will be teaming up with America Supports You, A Million Thanks, and Microsoft to show support for our uniformed personnel.

Apple has dominated the market by emphasizing simplicity above all, and Microsoft aims to follow suit with the Zune, a wireless-enabled player that sells for 250 U.S. dollars.
But the Zune's relentlessly proprietary nature suggests Microsoft drew the wrong lessons from Apple: It matched the restrictiveness of the iTunes Store, not its utility.
The Zune player itself is the most appealing part of the package. About the size of a deck of cards, it comes in dark gray, brown or white and provides almost 30 gigabytes of hard-drive storage. It has an intuitiveness absent from most other iPod rivals.
Pick up the Zune, and its controls fall under your thumb: a back button, a circular four-way controller that resembles an iPod's click-wheel dial and a play/pause button. Once you realize that the central controller doesn't spin, its operation is pretty much self-evident: Press up or down to adjust volume; press left or right to skip to the previous or next song.
The Zune's bright, clear color screen, three inches across, allows more room to present its menus and makes building a playlist more obvious than on an iPod.
When you view photos or videos, the screen automatically switches orientation to a wide landscape mode. A built-in FM tuner offers an alternative to your music and can even display the program data many stations broadcast, such as song titles or call letters.
The rest of the Zune's design shows a similar elegance. Its headphones click together magnetically for tidier storage, while its grippy, rubber-like surface should resist scratching. The thing even looks clean, without the usual Windows logo or even the word "Microsoft."
The Zune, however, is a little thick and heavy, about six-tenths of an inch and just over six ounces with headphones. That added bulk comes from the Zune's major innovation, its wireless music sharing.
The Windows XP-only Zune software is almost functionally identical to the new Windows Media Player 11. Like that program, it can't subscribe to podcasts or print out CD labels, but otherwise it handles most digital-music chores smoothly.
The Zune Marketplace can't replace those other sources of Windows Media content, since it doesn't sell TV shows or movies. Its music library totals about 2 million songs, fewer than other popular Web music services, with most available for either rent or purchase.

2007 Volkswagen Passat R36




Slated to first appear at the Essen motorshow in Germany, the R36 joins the R32 Golf as performance versions of Volkswagen's popular models. The R36 uses a hopped up version of the 3.6 liter engine good for 300 bhp and 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds. New aesthetic touches include a deeper, more aggressive front intakes, 18 inch wheels and a more exciting interior. More details will be available after the release at Essen.

HDTV..another historic first



Images from the world's first high definition television (HDTV) broadcast from space flashed across the screen yesterday in Times Square. On Nov. 15, 2006, NASA made history with the first live HDTV broadcasts from space, in cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Discovery HD Theater and Japanese broadcast network NHK.

The two HDTV broadcasts featured Expedition 14 Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria on the International Space Station, with Flight Engineer Thomas Reiter serving as camera operator aboard the 220-mile-high laboratory.

"HDTV provides up to six times the resolution of regular analog video," said Rodney Grubbs, NASA principal investigator. "On previous missions, we've flown HDTV cameras but had to wait until after the mission to retrieve the tapes, watch the video and share it with the science and engineering community, the media and the public. For the first time ever, this test lets us stream live HDTV from space so the public can experience what its like to be there."

Known as the Space Video Gateway, the system transmits high bandwidth digital television signals to the ground that are not only spectacular, but also valuable to scientists, engineers and managers.

NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, along with both NHK and Discovery, are cooperating in this effort though a Space Act Agreement originally signed in 2002.

Research -- Google

There's something deeper to learn about Google from Gmail than the initial reaction to the product features. Ignore for a moment the observations about Google leapfrogging their competitors with more user value and a new feature or two. Or Google diversifying away from search into other applications; they've been doing that for a while. Or the privacy red herring.
No, the story is about seemingly incremental features that are actually massively expensive for others to match, and the platform that Google is building which makes it cheaper and easier for them to develop and run web-scale applications than anyone else.

An overlooked feature that made Google really cool in the beginning was their snippets. These show a few sample sentences from each web page matching the search.


Consider the insane cost to implement this simple feature. Google has to keep a copy of every web page on the Internet on their servers in order to show the piece of the web page where the search terms hit. Everything is served from RAM, only booted from disk. And they have multiple separate search clusters at their co-locations. This means that Google is currently storing multiple copies of the entire web in RAM. That would really require a lot of memory for the purpose.


Google has taken the last 10 years of systems software research out of university labs, and built their own proprietary, production quality system. It's a distributed computing platform that can manage web-scale datasets on 100,000 node server clusters. It includes a petabyte, distributed, fault tolerant filesystem, distributed RPC code, probably network shared memory and process migration. And a datacenter management system which lets a handful of ops engineers effectively run 100,000 servers. Any of these projects could be the sole focus of a startup.


The most obvious concern for Gmail is storage. They can't lose emails and more importantly, would never be expected to be down. The backup system used isn't the conventional one. RAID isn't any good. If a RAID disk fails, it requires human intervention to replace the disk, and in case more disks fail, it can lead to data loss. Moreover, it requires hot swap trays which are an expensive piece of equippment. RAID has a problem with high end availability of data at the server level.


Google has 100,000 servers. If a disk fails, it is left to be reclaimed/repalced later. Hardware failures need to be instantly routed around by software.


Google has built their own distributed, fault-tolerant, petabyte filesystem, the Google Filesystem. This is ideal for the job. Say GFS replicates user email in three places; if a disk or a server dies, GFS can automatically make a new copy from one of the remaining two. Compress the email for a 3:1 storage win, then store user's email in three locations, and their raw storage need is approximately equivalent to the user's mail size.


The Gmail servers wouldn't be top-heavy with lots of disk. They need the CPU for indexing and page view serving anyway. No fancy RAID card or hot-swap trays, just 1-2 disks per 1U server.
It's straightforward to spreadsheet out the economics of the service, taking into account average storage per user, cost of the servers, and monetization per user per year. Google apparently puts the operational cost of storage at $2 per gigabyte. It is assume the yearly monetized value of a webmail user to be in the $1-10 range.


Google has 100,000 servers.


Any sane ops person would rather go with a fancy $5000 server than a bare $500 motherboard plus disks sitting exposed on a tray. But that's a 10X difference to the cost of a CPU cycle. And this frees up the algorithm designers to invent better stuff.


Without cheap CPU cycles, the coders won't even consider algorithms that the Google guys are deploying. They're just too expensive to run.


Google doesn't deploy bare motherboards on exposed trays anymore; they're on at least the fourth iteration of their cheap hardware platform. Google now has an institutional competence building and maintaining servers that cost a lot less than the servers everyone else is using. And they do it with fewer people.


They must have a little internal factory to deploy servers, and the level of automation needed to run that many boxes. Either network boot or a production line to pre-install disk images. Servers that self-configure on boot to determine their network config and load the latest rev of the software they'll be running. Normal datacenter ops practices don't scale to what Google has.


Google is a company that has built a single very large, custom computer. It's running their own cluster operating system. They make their big computer even bigger and faster each month, while lowering the cost of CPU cycles. It's looking more like a general purpose platform than a cluster optimized for a single application.
